Night Test: Leica S2

Hungerford Bridge at Night

I have been out with the Lecia S2 doing some night time tests for a 26 day (night) shoot that I have to do for the whole of April… I chose the Leica S2 because 1 I wanted to use a style of camera that I’m used to (SLR shape) 2 I wanted a large sensor and 3 I wanted to use Leica Glass (which is still one of the top two Glass around Zeiss being the other)

I found it surprising in many way. It’s lighter and smaller than I thought. Easy to use. Intuitive controls. And infuriating in a few ways that I didn’t think it would be. The main one being that the rear screen is next to useless for views images. Shockingly bad in fact. Don’t really understand why this needs to be the case and is something I hope that Leica looks at with any updates.

The view finder wonderful. big, clear and all the information that you need. The menu system is well thought out. Handles very nice.

I’ve looked at the files I shoot on the one night test. When its good it very very good … when its bad its really bad. I kept forgetting just how massive this sensor is and tried to treat it like a Nikon D3. It ain’t:  and will bite if you don’t treat it with due respect…

As I say I’ve only been out for One night of shooting. I will report back after spending a month in a work situation with this camera. I have high hopes for what it will produce. I need to be on top of my game as this camera is not very forgiving if you are out in any way. But does reward you with some stunning files to work with if you are…
